Thinking Illustration - RCA

Last week Frazer and myself were invited to take part in a one day
discussion group along with 10 other Illustrators and academics at the
RCA. It was a very interesting and positive day with lots to consider
and discuss on the train home; some of which we will be bringing to sessions
over the coming weeks.

Workshop: “Think-editorial-Illustration: analysis of founding qualities of editorial illustration”

With a series of proposed founding qualities this workshop will focus on the nature of editorial illustration. Participants, coming from their own practice and experience, will challenge and build upon these starting points and play with the ideas that can lead towards new online illustration formats.

Where the print media industry is rapidly shifting towards the online environment, the role the visual, be it photographic, moving or illustrated is being re-evaluated. If editorial illustration is to remain a significant contributor within the new media formats, its ask for a deeper understanding. Beyond the pretty picture, what are the qualities that make an editorial illustration; in print and online? This workshop aims to create a deeper insight into editorial illustration as a medium, through exploration of its potential in existing and developing media contexts; in print and online.

Illustration will be the subject, but also the debating tool, to stimulate an outcome in words and images, there will be plenty of pencils and paper, do bring your own laptop if you wish...The main outcomes will be collected for a small publication, which after the event, will be sent to all participants.

Thinking beyond 2D surface material to create illustration.

Below are examples of Illustrators working with less conventional
surfaces to create narratives; what is interesting is how the context
can influence the message:

Firstly is Stephanie Hollick who is an ex Hallam student. The project 
was about studying how we now perceive the term Britishness. 

Next is British Illustrator Laura Carlin who has recently released a selection 
of ceramics work on her blog. These are excellent bodies of work and really
consider the form on which she is directly working as a method to illustrate
a narrative.

Jo Davis and Derek Brazell are both actively involved with the AOI and have
recently released a book titled 'Making Great Illustration' they have also released
a blog about the illustrators and designers included in the book. It's a great resource
and provides interviews with the Illustrators mostly from their studios.

V&A Illustration Awards

Details for this years V&A illustration awards has now been released - this is one of the best Illustration awards  and should be seriously considered by all level 6 illustration students. Previous professional winners have included Olivier Kugler, Mathew Richardson and Laura Carlin - Our own Mr Frazer Hudson was given the esteemed honour of judging the Student category last year and was greatly impressed with the standard of work submitted. Last years student winner was Hannah Simpson, Hannah is currently studying at Kingston university.

V&A Illustration Awards 2012

Entry into the Awards is free

The V&A Illustration Awards celebrate the best illustration published over the last year. Original artwork from the best illustrated book, book cover, editorial illustration and student illustrator of the year will be recognised.
There are three published categories
The winner in each category will receive £2,000 and a trophy and the judges will select an overall winner of the V&A Illustration Awards who will receive an additional £2,000.
There is one student category.
The Student Illustrator of the Year will receive £2,000 and a trophy. The runner up will receive £1,000.

Entry into all categories of the V&A Illustration Awards is only via the online entry form.

Folio Society Illustration competition 2011

The folio society Illustration competition is now open - this is an excellent Illustration competition that inspires both student and professional submissions. The closing date for entries is Tuesday 10th January 2012.

Anyone thinking about projects for Grad 1 this could be good choice.

Level 6 new brief / graphics working on a small scale

Following on from discussions this morning, here are some examples
of where graphics are used on a small scale - below is a collection
of mainly European matchbox labels you will notice that at this scale
shape and line quality are extremely important.

SHAUN TAN FIRST UK EXHIBITION

Shaun Tan is one of the most exciting illustrator /animation film makers in the world today The first six months of 2011 has seen him win an Academy Award (Oscar) for best short animated film, the Australian Dromkeen Medal and Astrid Linden Award (popularly known as the Nobel Prize for Literature).

To celebrate, Illustration cupboard is delighted to host Shaun Tan in the first major exhibition of his work in Britain. In an exciting multi-media event, working drawings, studies and finished artwork have been chosen by Shaun from his own collection for display. A selection of these will be available for purchase providing the collector a rare collecting opportunity.

The Vorticists: Manifesto for a Modern World

If you are in London over the summer break I recommend the following show
at Tate Britain, the SHU library also has some fantastic printed examples of
Vorticist works in it's archive.

Tate Britain 14 June  –  4 September 2011

Vorticism was a radical art movement that shone briefly but brightly in the years before and during World War I. This exhibition celebrates the full electrifying force and vitality of this short-lived but pivotal modernist movement that was based in London but international in make-up and ambition.

The Vorticists forged a distinctive style combining machine-age forms and energetic imagery, embracing modernity and blasting away the staid legacy of the Edwardian past.

Focusing on the only two Vorticist exhibitions mounted during the lifetime, in London and New York, this striking exhibition brings together over 100 key works; including photography and literary ephemera, as well as seminal pieces by Wyndham Lewis, Jacob Epstein and Henri Gaudier-Brzeska.

This exhibition aims to shine a new light on this revolutionary group of artists, presenting the style, radical aesthetics and thoughts of one of the most truly avant-garde art movements in British history.

THE COLLECTABLES SUMMER SHOW

Recent graduates Sean Gee and Caitlin Totten invite you to their summer show.

‘Collecting is an obsession, an occupation, a disease, an addiction, a fascination, and absurdity, a fate. Those who do it, must do it - No matter what the cost’

The Work on display shows two individuals perspectives of the lighter side of having a collectable obsession. They explore common items that people collect for years and the impact it can have if that person became obsessed with it.

The exhibition is running from the 22nd August - 7th September in the Furnival Gallery Balcony Space (upstairs).
The opening night will be on the 22nd August with drinks and prints thrown in for free :)

UNLEASHED / BEST IN NORTH ILLUSTRATION AWARDS

Well done to eveyone involved with the Unleashed exhibition and awards.
The exhibition has work from Hallam students Rob Griffiths, Tom Ball,
James Smart, Sean Gee, Tom Buswell, Tom Poynter, Kirsty Wilkinson,
James Smart and Rebecca Roberts. The exhibition looks fantastic and
is well worth a visit if you are in Manchester.

Lost and Found art blog
